Context:
The seahorse becomes a central symbol in my artistic project - a creature that possesses a fascinating strength in its fragility and strangeness. With its bony, almost sculptural appearance and its upright posture, it embodies ambivalences that are also dealt with in my work: Vulnerability and resilience, fragility and presence.
The reversal of classic gender roles in the life of the seahorse is particularly significant. The males bear the offspring and thus take on a role that is often socially ascribed to women. This phenomenon challenges conventions and opens up space for discussions about gender identities, role distribution and care work.
The seahorse thus becomes a symbol of diversity and safe spaces - a creature that declares itself without having teeth, that moves even though it is vulnerable. These characteristics are also reflected in my artistic practice. Using printed fabric and delicate, fragile structures, I explore social issues and create spaces that are both critical and inviting.
My work combines the formal aesthetics of the seahorse with a deeper meaning: a manifesto for the beauty and strength of fragility, a plea for diversity and a call to question social norms.
Scope:
The work comprises two wire sculptures wrapped in partially screen-printed fabric, a wooden plinth designed with oil pastels and hundreds of drawings made from a combination of felt-tip pens and oil pastels. The work is complemented by screen-printed fabrics and a manifesto made of fabric and wire, which is characterized by its spatial incomprehensibility and underlines the thematic complexity of the work.
